Symposium (D.3) "Materials at extreme conditions: static or dynamic compression combined or not with low or high temperatures”

at the upcoming EUROMAT 2017 European Congress and Exhibition on Advanced Materials and Process of FEMS, September 17-22, 2017, Thessaloniki, Greece

This symposium intents to host papers addressing the experimental or theoretical study of the electronic, mechanical and structural properties of all states of matter (solid, liquid or gaseous) under static or dynamic compression combined or not with low or high temperatures. It allows for the understanding of the behavior of materials, probing their property modifications, possible phase transitions or chemical reactions and aims to act as a lighthouse, illuminating an era of new paradigms in materials science and technology.

20th International Summer School on Vacuum, Electron and Ion Technologies

Dear Colleague,

It is pleasure us to inform you that the 20th International Summer School on Vacuum, Electron and Ion Technologies (VEIT 2017) will be held in the resort of Sozopol, Bulgaria from September 25 to September 29, 2017.

You are cordially invited to participate in the International Summer School on Vacuum, Electron and Ion Technologies. The 2017 edition is the 20th in a series of events organized with the aim to act as a forum for interchange and dissemination of knowledge and ideas on the latest developments in electron-, ion- and plasma-assisted technologies. It is a major scientific event and a meeting place for young scientists and distinguished speakers and experts from around the world focusing on the state-of-the-art scientific developments with emphasis on both the physics and the engineering aspects of these technologies which have become important research tools and production processes. The scientific program will include about 25 invited lectures and reviews. Contributed papers are also solicited and will be presented mainly in poster sessions. Informal atmosphere, combined with the spirit of the sea, will stimulate further collaborations and joint works.

The official language of the School is English

Scientific discussion meeting "Breakdown of ergodicity in quantum systems: from solids to synthetic matter"

Scientific discussion meeting organised by Professor Sir Michael Pepper FREng FRS, Dr Arijeet Pal, Dr Zlatko Papic, Dr Ulrich Schneider and Professor Steven Simon

Ergodic systems lie at the heart of statistical physics since they reach thermal equilibrium and 'forget' their initial conditions, thereby allowing for coarse-grained classical descriptions. Recently, non-ergodic quantum many-body systems, which fail to thermalise and decohere completely, came into focus. This interdisciplinary meeting will address their fundamental challenges and experimental realisations, including many-body localisation and other novel, non-classical long-time behaviour.

A draft programme, and biographies of the organisers and speakers is available below. Speaker abstracts will be available closer to the meeting date. Recorded audio of the talks will be available on this page after the event has taken place.
